Thad leaned back in his chair in the board room, facing off once again with Roarke Covington on a large real estate deal. Roarke smirked at him from across the expensive mahogany table. Thad rarely took the bait. He defeated Roarke more often than not, but the two of them were always counting points on who won a particular round. He wasn’t a cocky bastard like Roarke, but winning still mattered.

His father sat on Thad’s right and Jared was on his left. The rest of the chairs were filled with various other employees who handled financial matters for Thad’s company. Directly across from them was Leslie Newton, the man they were here to negotiate with. The man Roarke was representing in this real estate deal.

“Shall we get started?” Newton said as he eyed Thad.

Newton was the owner of three old mansions on Long Island that had recently been listed in the mansion section of the Wall Street Journal. The mansion section was an excellent place to advertise a property because the feature page always discussed the properties' history and any recent work done. Normally it was movie stars or other big names putting up their ten million dollar Malibu beach houses or the like, but every now and then some real gems showed up in the section.

“Since the Journal featured one of these properties recently, there’s been a lot of interest…” Newton began a lengthy presentation to the dozen or so people involved in the potential transaction.

Thad was pulled out of his thoughts as Jared poked his hand on the table with his legal notepad. He glanced at Jared, who gave a subtle nod to the pad. He looked down at what Jared had written.

What # are you on?

Thad almost laughed. This made him think of grade school where boys and girls sent little notes to each other asking if they liked a certain guy or girl. He picked up his pen and calmly scratched out a reply, acting as if he was taking notes.

4/5/6 — Spent the weekend with her and Lyra. That counts.

He slid the notepad back to Jared. While this exchange was going on, both were still listening to the presentation. Over the years, he and Jared had become adept at multitasking, even in important meetings. Jared wrote something and slid the pad back.

That doesn’t count.

Thad rolled his eyes, scribbled a response, and slid it back.

You weren’t there. Trust me, it counts.

Jared took a bit longer to respond this time.

Fine. You taking her to the gala Friday? We got a sitter for Haley. You could have her look after Lyra too.

Christ, he’d forgotten all about the Met. The tickets were sitting in his office and he’d just completely spaced on it. He was invited every year and always went because it was a great place to make business contacts. But if he took Veronica, he might actually enjoy himself.

He hesitated a second before writing out his reply.
